TALK | The Borgias: The Most Infamous Family in History? | Sarah Dunant

Bartolomeo Veneto, Idealised Portrait of a Young Woman as Flora (Lucrezia Borgia), c. 1520.

By the end of the 15th century, the beauty and creativity of Italy was matched by its brutality and corruption, and nowhere more than in Rome and in the Church. Acclaimed novelist of the Italian Renaissance, Sarah Dunant reveals the true history of the notorious family of Alexander Borgia, who, by means of his wealth and charisma, bought his way into the papacy. Stripping away the colourful tales about this Spanish pope, his ruthless and unstable son, Cesare, and his daughter, Lucrezia, who became a pawn in her father’s machinations, she shows that sometimes the truth is more intoxicating than myth.
