Spring Cannot be Cancelled is an uplifting manifesto that affirms art and nature’s capacity to divert and inspire in troubled times. In this talk on his acclaimed new book written together with David Hockney, art critic and author Martin Gayford discusses Hockney's new Normandy drawings and paintings alongside works by van Gogh, Monet, Bruegel and others.

Soon after turning eighty, Hockney sought out rustic tranquility for the first time and moved to Normandy. So when Covid-19 struck, it made little difference to life in the old farmhouse where he had set up a studio a year before, in time to paint the arrival of spring. In fact he relished the enforced isolation as an opportunity for even greater devotion to his art. This passion culminated in the exhibition David Hockney: The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020 opening in May at the Royal Academy.

Spring Cannot be Cancelled: David Hockney in Normandy by David Hockney and Martin Gayford is published by Thames & Hudson. Ticket holders will receive a code to use online for 25% off the retail price.

Proceeds from our ticket sales benefit museums, galleries and other arts-based organisations and projects.
