Artists have drawn and painted the British landscape for over a thousand years, yet each generation has brought a different focus. Some have imagined it poetically while others have tried hard to capture how it looked under changeable British skies. Landscape has appealed not only to our sense of beauty but also to our emotions: there have been times when we craved spectacular scenery, and times when we wanted gentler pastures.
In this talk, Dr Susan Owens, author of Spirit of Place: Artists, Writers and the British Landscape and former Curator of Paintings at the V&A, looks into the circumstances in which some of the most beautiful and intriguing of our landscape paintings were created and considers the qualities that make them precious today. Artists discussed will include Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable, JMW Turner, Samuel Palmer, John Everett Millais and Richard Dadd.
Spirit of Place: Artists, Writers and the British Landscape by Susan Owens is published by Thames & Hudson. Ticket holders will receive a code to use online for 25% off the retail price.
Proceeds from our ticket sales benefit museums, galleries and other arts-based organisations and projects.
