TALK | Turner and Constable: Art, Life, Landscape | Nicola Moorby

John Constable, Hampstead Heath, with Pond and Bathers, 1821. Kenwood.

Born just fourteen months apart, one in London and the other in rural Suffolk, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable went on to change the face of British art. The two men have routinely been seen as polar opposites, not least by their peers. Differing in temperament, background, beliefs and vision, they created images as dissimilar as their personalities.

Join art historian and curator, Nicola Moorby, as she discusses some of the themes from her new book, Turner and Constable: Art, Life, Landscape. Published to coincide with the 250th anniversary of Turner’s birth and in anticipation of Constable’s in 2026, she offers a fresh perspective on these two extraordinary artists, uncovering the layers of fiction that have embellished and disguised their parallel lives and works.

Nicola Moorby’s book Turner and Constable: Art, Life, Landscape is published by Yale University Press (11 March 2025). Ticket holders will receive a discount code to use via their website here. UK orders only. Free UK P&P.
