TALK | Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious | James Russell

Tirzah Garwood, Etna, 1944.

Last November the exhibition Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious opened at Dulwich Picture Gallery. Long overshadowed by her more famous husband Eric Ravilious (1903-42), Tirzah Garwood (1908-51) has now been revealed as a multi-talented painter, printmaker and author whose work is characterised by wit, clarity and an extraordinary imagination.

This ARTscapades lecture by curator James Russell explores Garwood's achievements in the context of her life and, in particular, of her fascinating artistic and personal relationship with Ravilious. Like the exhibition itself, the lecture features numerous works that have been hidden from public view since Garwood's Memorial Exhibition in 1952. Whether you're planning to visit the exhibition (which runs until 26 May) or are just curious about Tirzah Garwood, this is a lively and engaging introduction to an approachable artist who found inspiration in the everyday world around her.

Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious is at Dulwich Picture Gallery until 26 May 2025.

This event will be recorded. Ticket holders are emailed a link to view the recording afterwards which is available for one month. Proceeds from ARTscapades ticket sales benefit museums, galleries and other arts-based organisations and projects.
