TALK | Angelica Kauffman | Annette Wickham

Angelica Kauffman, Portrait of Emma, Lady Hamilton, as Muse of Comedy, 1791. Private Collection.

Described by a contemporary as ‘possibly the most cultivated woman in Europe’, Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807) was one of the most celebrated artists of her day and was known for both her portraiture and her history paintings.

This talk by co-Curator Annette Wickham, Curator of Works on Paper at the Royal Academy, introduces the exhibition of Kauffman’s work currently at the Royal Academy. It will cover the artist’s training and early work in Italy, her rise to fame in London and her involvement in the founding of the Royal Academy itself in 1768. It will also look at Kauffman’s move to Rome in 1782 where her studio and salon became a hub for the city’s cultural life. Kauffman’s later paintings include some of her most confident and sophisticated works.

The exhibition Angelica Kauffman is at the Royal Academy from 1 March to 30 June 2024
