Explore the iconic Gothic cathedrals of France in this two-day study course with leading art historian and medieval specialist Dr Jana Gajdošová.
From the Romanesque style and the birth of Gothic in Paris, this course traces the evolution and cultural impact of these architectural marvels, their structural experimentation, triumphs and setbacks, technical advances and the symbolic significance which imbued these extraordinary buildings.
Includes two lectures, Q&A and a short break. Tickets £20
Lecture one: High Gothic: Reims, Amiens, Bourges, Beauvais
Lecture two: Notre Dame, Paris: 12th, 13th and 19th century
The integration and refinement of architectural elements such as the pointed arch, flying buttresses, triforia, and ribbed vaults in early Gothic buildings facilitated increased height and structural stability, resulting in more refined and taller edifices, exemplified by the cathedrals in Reims, Amiens, Bourges, and Beauvais. This daring approach aimed to create soaring structures filled with light, culminating in majestic cathedrals that captivated the medieval world. Gothic architects constantly refined their craft, inspiring awe and wonder for centuries to come. While numerous significant Gothic buildings from northern France will be explored, particular attention will be devoted to Notre Dame in Paris.
