Fakes and forgeries have caused major problems for the art world from antiquity to modern times. In this talk, Dr David Bellingham, Programme Director at Sotheby's Institute of Art, will first discuss how we define a ‘fake’ and a ‘forgery’, and then proceed to examine some famous cases from the history of art. He will also trace recent shifts in the art historical reception of the replication of art from different periods, as well as the fashion for the deliberate copying of visual intellectual property by artists today.

Proceeds from our ticket sales benefit museums, galleries and other arts-based organisations and projects.
