STUDY EVENING | The Great Mughals: Art, Architecture and Opulence | Susan Stronge

Bichitr, A Princely Gathering in a Garden, c. 1630-5. From the Minto Album, Chester Beatty Library, Dublin.

One of the wealthiest courts in the world, the Great Mughals founded an immense early modern empire and made monumental artistic achievements.

For the first time in the UK, this sumptuous exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum celebrates the extraordinary creative output and internationalist culture of the Mughal Court (about 1560–1660). Hindustani artists, Iranian masters and even a few Europeans came together in the imperial workshops to create a new, hybrid art.

Susan Stronge is this exhibition’s lead curator and is also Senior Curator in the Asian Department at the V&A specialising in the arts of the Mughal empire. This two-lecture Study Evening for ARTscapades introduces us to the exhibition and explores the evolution of Mughal art during the age of three of its most famous emperors: Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan.

Study Evening - includes two lectures, Q&A and a short break. Tickets £20

Part One: The reign of Akbar and the creation of a new art.

Part Two: Court art under Jahangir and Shah Jahan.

The Great Mughals: Art, Architecture and Opulence is at the Victoria and Albert Museum until 5 May 2025. Supported by a grant from ARTscapades.

This event will be recorded. Ticket holders are emailed a link to view the recording afterwards which is available for one month. Proceeds from ARTscapades ticket sales benefit museums, galleries and other arts-based organisations and projects.
