The final session of this three week course (which coincides with the Royal Academy of Arts major exhibition Spain and the Hispanic World), with Dr Jacqueline Cockburn, a renowned expert in the art, literature and language of Spain.
Study morning - includes two lectures, Q&A and a coffee break.
Lecture One | Emerging from the Shadows: Goya’s Self-Portraits
This lecture will focus on the work and times of Francisco Goya. Living through one of the most turbulent times in the history of Spain, Goya’s self-portraits will be discussed in order to shed light on the historical moment in which he lived; his illness, deafness and growing sense of isolation and his sense of identity. Goya will be explored through his depictions of himself, frequently in shadows or silhouetted against a bright light, sometimes painted over, sometimes hidden and always against a backdrop of a Bourbon Monarchy in crisis.
Lecture Two | Joaquin Sorolla: Painter of Light
Sorolla is sometimes known as a Spanish Impressionist, as many of his paintings are permeated by colour and light. He was grounded in Spanish traditions of realism, but was influenced by Impressionism, and open to the ideas of the contemporary avant-garde. His sunlit paintings of fishermen, his beach scenes, portraits and regional studies of Spain, housed at the Hispanic Society of America, were eagerly sought after by European and American collectors, and he was a phenomenal international success in his own lifetime.
