Sir Thomas Gresham, The Royal Exchange Est., London. 1840s.
What shapes a city? …The people.
Often the narrative of London is told through disaster: fire, bombs and the building of railways have all played their part in shaping the current city. But what about its inhabitants? Through its centuries there have been a number of enterprising individuals who have transformed this city through their ideas and vision.
Join Blue Badge Guide Katie Wignall on a journey from the 16th to the 20th century to discover the unsung visionaries who shaped London. Using high definition video, images and live commentary, this ARTscapades virtual tour explores London’s architecture, sites and hidden details through their lives and work. The tour includes a detailed look at some amazing Londoners like Thomas Gresham, the 16th self-made businessman; Nicholas Barbon, the unscrupulous eccentric who created fire insurance and Fanny Wilkinson, the woman who designed seventh-five London gardens.
This event will be recorded. Ticket holders will be emailed a link to view the recording afterwards which is available for one month. Proceeds from ARTscapades ticket sales benefit museums, galleries and other arts-based organisations and projects.
