“There are no ugly women, only lazy ones”, quipped cosmetics entrepreneur, Helena Rubinstein, whose company made her one of the world's richest women.

Businesswoman, art collector, and philanthropist, Helena Rubinstein was born in 1870 in Krakow, Poland. She emigrated to Australia and moved to London, Paris and New York as her luxury empire grew.  A self-made female millionaire, she commissioned work from artists such as Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí (who was to design a powder compact for her) and became one of the leading collectors of avant-garde art and African sculpture in the early twentieth century.

Her exclusive beauty salons influenced and blurred the conceptual boundaries between fashion, art galleries, and the domestic interior. Join National Gallery lecturer Lucrezia Walker to discover more about this extraordinary woman, the subject of recent exhibitions in New York, Vienna and Paris.

Proceeds from our ticket sales benefit museums, galleries and other arts-based organisations and projects.
