Tate Modern’s exhibition, The Making of Rodin, includes fascinating preparatory work for The Gates of Hell, a commission Rodin began working on in 1882 but left unfinished at the time of his death in 1917. Basing his work on Dante’s epic poem, The Divine Comedy, Rodin’s preparatory work for his magnificent doors became a source of inspiration for his entire career.
This talk by Dr Jacqueline Cockburn, marking the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death, will look at Rodin’s depictions of characters condemned to hell, including The Kiss, and their roles in the poem, one of the most important and influential works in the history of western literature.
