TALK | Edvard Munch Portraits | Alison Smith

Join Dr Alison Smith, curator of Edvard Munch Portraits, for an ARTscapades talk to explore this exciting exhibition currently on view at the National Portrait Gallery and the first exhibition in the UK to focus on this important, but sometimes overlooked, aspect of the artist’s work.

Although Edvard Munch is often best known for his iconic work The Scream, his portraits are a powerful yet often under-explored aspect of his legacy. Throughout his life, Munch produced a vast array of portraits of friends, models, patrons, and especially himself, capturing the nuances of human emotion and psychological depth. From early sketches to later, more mature pieces, these portraits reveal Munch's mastery of diverse media, including painting, drawing, and printmaking —along with a lasting influence on the portrait genre.

Edvard Munch Portraits is at the National Portrait Gallery from 13 March to 15 June 2025.

This event will be recorded. Ticket holders are emailed a link to view the recording afterwards which is available for one month. Proceeds from ARTscapades ticket sales benefit museums, galleries and other arts-based organisations and projects.

This is an online event hosted on Zoom which can be watched live with Q&A, or on-demand for one month afterwards. You will receive your link to access the event in your email confirmation and the on-demand link after the event ends.
