The palette is the most intimate and potent of an artist’s tools. From traditional wooden boards with thumb holes to ceramic plates and from plastic paint pots to the surfaces of a studio, each palette and the colours that remain on its surface provide a vital insight into an artist and their creative process.
In this ARTscapades talk, colour expert and art historian Dr Alexandra Loske, curator of the Royal Pavilion, Brighton, introduces the history and appeal of palettes as mementos, trophies, symbols and visceral connections to artists' bodies and minds. Among them are palettes (both physical and painted) from the 16th century to the present day, including examples by Catharina van Hemessen, Rembrandt, Vincent Van Gogh, Rosa Bonheur, Lucien Freud, and JMW Turner.
The Artist’s Palette: The palettes behind the paintings of 50 great artists by Alexandra Loske is published by Thames & Hudson (October 2024). Ticket holders will receive a code to use for 25% off via their website here. UK orders only.
Proceeds from ARTscapades ticket sales benefit museums, galleries and other arts-based organisations and projects.
