In his new book Encounters with Artists, Richard Cork draws on his impeccable skills as a critic to tell the story of his encounters with some of the world’s most influential artists. From a serendipitous meeting with Pablo Picasso in Cannes in 1965 through to his role as chief art critic for The Times, his personal encounters reveal the characters behind the art.
Join us for this talk as Cork discusses his conversations with individuals who can look back over a lifetime’s career — David Hockney, Louise Bourgeois, Helen Frankenthaler, Henry Moore, Lucien Freud and Francis Bacon. His interviews with younger artists encountered at the beginning of their careers — Tracey Emin, Rachel Whiteread, Sarah Lucas. Meetings with artists such as Bridget Riley, Antony Gormley, and most recently in 2022, with Sonia Boyce. All time permitting!
Cork has found that “talking to artists can, in my experience, be surprising, revealing, salutary, testing, provocative, stimulating, and at times capable of overturning all my preconceptions about the individuals I encounter.”
Encounters with Artists by Richard Cork is published by Thames & Hudson (12 October 2023). Ticket holders will receive a code for 30% off the £25 retail price of the book via their website. UK orders only.
